I appreciate it when a movie dares to be different. Emilia Pérez is different than any other movie I’ve seen and that’s my favorite part about it. Emilia Pérez is the tale of a lawyer and her client, a Mexican drug cartel leader who undergoes gender reassignment surgery to create a new identity (Emilia Pérez) to escape their past and become their true self. That’s not a story I’ve seen before. And, it’s a musical. Not what you’d expect.
I really appreciated that the movie dared to be different. However, I didn’t like the movie. Neither the lawyer, the client, nor any of the other characters are likable at all. I didn’t empathize, care for any of the characters, or what happened to any of the characters.
The film is a musical, but none of the songs are earworms. Instead, it’s more sing-talking where the characters are expressing their inner thoughts. The songs are successful in conveying the inner monologues but they are all far from catchy in any way. That most of the movie is in Spanish with subtitles doesn’t make it any easier to get through.
The film has won many awards and is nominated for many Oscars, but I can’t recommend it. I’m sorry to say I found it to be a bit of a slog.
