The Gorge

PG-13 2025 ‧ Action/Romance 2h 7m

Does this movie live up to its title? Yes, there is a gorge.

Miles Teller is an American mercenary named Levi and Anya Taylor-Joy is Drasa, a Russian sniper. Levi is hired to be the lone guard the west side of the gorge and Drasa is hired to guard the east. From what? We don’t know, at first. Correspondence between the two guards is forbidden. So, they never interact with each other the entire movie. Just kidding. These career military types quickly disregard that rule and start writing notes to each other almost immediately. When you are writing notes on pads of paper and looking at each other via binoculars, you fall in love fast. Really fast. It's probably because they each have ridiculously clear penmanship. What else do they do besides notes? Well, Teller was the lead in the drumming movie Whiplash and Taylor-Joy was the lead in the chess miniseries “The Queen’s Gambit” so their characters drum and play chess. (The director has gone on record that it’s a coincidence that two of the characters drum and play chess.)

So the first act is a love story. Not a great one. Acts Two and Three focus on the gorge. Spoiler, the gorge is filled with zombies. The love story takes a back seat and the rest of the movie is primarily an action film. Not a great one.

The Gorge is not a great movie; it is not a good movie. It is average-to-bad in such a way that it is enjoyable though. There are so many lapses in plausibility and so many clichés that it’s fun to point them out. For instance, the zombies stay in the gorge until Levi and Drasa play loud music. Why do they repeatedly play it? How does Drasa always know when Levi is looking at her through the binoculars? How much ammo can one gun shoot? This is a great movie to nitpick and call B.S. on.

I would never want to pay to see it in the theater, but it skipped the theater and went directly to streaming on Apple TV+. If you have that service and are looking to watch a Hallmark movie approximation of an action movie, here you go.
